Whitlock Bidding to be PDC Master

Determined Simon Whitlock has spoken of his pride and excitement at booking his place in the newest tournament on the darts’ calendar as the world’s leading stars prepare to head to Scotland.

Australian Whitlock, who is sponsored by leading paint brand Leyland Paints*, is in action this weekend in the inaugural Masters event.

The top 16 players in the world will do battle at Edinburgh’s Royal Highland Centre on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with fourth ranked Whitlock taking on Mervyn King on the opening night.

‘The Wizard’ is delighted to be part of such a high-profile event but knows each match will represent a huge challenge.

“This is going to be one of the most exciting tournaments I’ve ever played in and I’m honoured to be part of the field,” said the former European Champion, who reached the semi-finals of the Dutch Darts Masters at the weekend.

“To have the top 16 players in one tournament is going to be fantastic for the players and the fans alike.

“The standard of play in some of the non-televised tournaments recently has been exceptional so if everyone can continue that form it’s going to be a very memorable tournament.”

Whitlock kicked off a frantic end to the season in terms of televised tournament with a run to the quarter-finals of the World Grand Prix in Dublin earlier this month, losing a tight last eight encounter to James Wade.

He heads up to Scotland in confident mood and is hoping to continue his strong form through to the World Championships over Christmas.

Whitlock added: “It’s a huge time of the year and everyone is starting to talk about the World Championships.

“But the Masters, the Grand Slam and the Players Championship Finals are all huge tournaments in their own right so I’m not going to concentrate on the Worlds until they come around.”
