Australia were denied a place in the semi-finals of the World Cup of Darts after being edged out by Belgium in a brutal doubles decider on Sunday afternoon in Frankfurt.

Simon Whitlock and Paul Nicholson looked set to progress when ‘The Wizard’ defeated Ronny Huybrechts 4-2 and ‘The Asset’ got himself into a 3-0 lead against Kim Huybrechts. But Nicholson was punished for missing six match darts and the Premier League star hit back to snatch victory, setting up a doubles tie-breaker.

Tensions ran high in the decider, which saw Nicholson hit the winning double twice in response to two holds of throw from the Belgian brothers. Kim then took out 105 and Ronny landed the bull for 86 finish to take the win and end Australia’s glory hunt for another year.
