Simon Whitlock reached the quarter-finals of the Players Championship finals in Butlins, Minehead, defeating Peter Wright in a thrilling match in the process.

Australian star Whitlock knocked out world number four Wright in a last-leg decider on Saturday but was unable to defeat Adrian Lewis in the last eight, going down 10-7.

‘The Wizard’, who saw off Brendan Dolan in the first round on Friday, was pleased to have made it to the quarter-finals of a PDC major for the first time in 18 months.

“The win against Peter was huge for me and that’s why I got emotional at the end,” said Whitlock, the former European Champion.

“Unfortunately I couldn’t repeat it against Adrian but at least I’ve managed to show I can still mix it against the top players.

“I’ve been in the doldrums for a while now but I’m working hard and it is definitely coming back.”

Whitlock will now turn his attentions to next month’s World Championship, where he will face Ricky Evans in the first round.
