SIMON WHITLOCK 7 – 5 Wes Newton
Simon Whitlock produced a fantastic fight-back to defeat Wes Newton in Nottingham on Thursday night as he claimed his second victory of the 2013 McCoy’s Premier League.
‘The Wizard’ stormed back from being 4-1 behind to take a 7-5 triumph at the Capital FM Arena.
And the Australian admitted that he needed the win.
He said: “That could be a very important win.
“I have been playing well for the last few weeks but not getting the results so I’m thrilled to win tonight.
“Every game is so competitive that you’ve got to be happy with every good result.”
Newton took the first two legs before Whitlock responded with his first 180 on the way to a break of throw, which he sealed with a brilliant 116 finish.
Newton took out 65 to break straight back though and the next two legs were shared to leave ‘The Warrior’ 4-2 in front.
Whitlock produced a fabulous 120 finish for a break of throw after his opponent had missed a double attempt for the first time in the match.
‘The Wizard’ then took out 74 to reach parity before pinning double eight to take a 5-4 lead.
Newton missed a dart to level the match and Whitlock made him pay by bedding double ten to assure himself of a draw.
Whitlock hit his third 180 but Newton took the match to a final leg, where the world number five hit another maximum before sealing the win on double ten.
Whitlock faces James Wade in Manchester next week.
