Whitlock Eyes Bolton Prize

Simon Whitlock believes his blistering recent form makes him a major contender for Speedy Services UK Open glory when the ‘FA Cup of Darts’ heads to Bolton this week.

The popular Australian has enjoyed a rich vein of form over the last three months, suffering only two defeats in his last seven Premier League matches, winning a UK Open qualifier and reaching the final of the European Darts Trophy.

And now Whitlock – who is sponsored by Leyland Paints – is relishing his crack at glory at the Reebok Stadium as amateur qualifiers and professionals come together and compete for one of the biggest titles in the sport.

“There is always a special feeling at Bolton because it’s different to all the other major tournaments we play,” said the 43-year-old, who now lives in Waterlooville.

“The matches are shorter than the other major events and it’s a hectic weekend.

“But it’s a great tournament to be involved in and I feel confident going into it.

“I’ve had some good results over the last three months and if I continue with that form, I’m going to be tough to beat.”

Whitlock’s strong first half to the year has seen him consolidate his position at number five in the world rankings.

And he has his sights fixed on claiming a major televised title between now and the end of 2013.

“That’s a huge goal of mine and Bolton is the start of some really big tournaments coming up over the next few months,” he added.

“Winning the European Championship last year was very special and it would mean the world to me if I could win a major tournament in the UK.

“I feel I’m playing well enough to do it and it’s just a case of everything falling into place at the right time.”

Having finished fifth on the UK Open order of merit, Whitlock has a bye until Friday’s third round and sits out the first night of action on Thursday.
