Simon Whitlock believes that he will peak at a crucial time this season after playing well at a European Tour event in Riesa at the weekend.
The Australian number one has endured a tough spell of form of the last couple of years but says that he felt like ‘The Wizard of old’ during a run to the quarter-finals of the latest event.
Whitlock knocked out the highest ranked player in the tournament, Peter Wright, to reach the last eight, where he was edged out 6-5 by Benito van de Pas in a thrilling clash.
“I’m was so pleased with how I played,” said Whitlock, a former European Champion and World Championship finalist.
“I haven’t played like that for a while and it felt like the old me. My finishing was much better than it has been and it gives me great confidence to keep getting better for the rest of the year.
“I must admit that I feel like I missed an opportunity as if I could have got over the line against Benito I felt I was playing well enough to go all the way but that wasn’t to be.”
Whitlock will be straight back in action in Germany again this weekend as he heads to Mulheim – home to his 2012 European Championship glory – in the second of a triple-header of European Tour events this month.
