Australia’s dreams of winning the World Cup of Darts were dashed by England in the semi-finals on Sunday evening in Hamburg.
Simon Whitlock and Paul Nicholson, who were runners up to England two years ago, came close to reaching the final again but couldn’t exact revenge on Phil Taylor and Adrian Lewis.
Nicholson kept their hopes alive by beating Lewis after Whitlock had been defeated by Taylor but they missed out on place in the decider when they lost in the pairs.
Australia had kicked off their campaign on Friday with a 5-2 success over Denmark before seeing off Hong Kong on Saturday.
The pair then defeated Wales on Sunday afternoon but couldn’t deny England a place in a third consecutive final.
The tournament was won by the Netherlands team, which featured Michael van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld.
